Life takes turns..... a little too swiftly in Indian consumers' case. I was having discussions with a close friend yesterday evening while sipping a large cup of Black Assam Tea brewed perfectly by the expert from the pantry (more on that a little later in the post). The discussions went to media industry where both of us have personal and professional interests.
He was very interested in niche channels of interest that otherwise get lost in the sea of offerings. He was very keen to move from one DTH operator to another as his favourite channel was not being shown. We got discussing new channels and the future of channels in India. Back to the choice issue after sipping more of delicious tea, we got to look at the comprehensive offerings made by two of the leading DTH operators. It just so happened that none of the two had a full choice of this friend of mine. Now the issue came that actually there are a few of his (and his family's) choices that are not available on either of the DTH offerings but on the local cable TV in Goregaon of NCR. So he would like to have that option also. But there is a limit of 70-80 channels on cable so is there no perfect solution?
IPTV - yes but is there enough bandwidth? Only time will tell.
Now back to tea, one of my favourite beverages. There was a good old time that a typical north indian was aware of tea and Darjeeling tea. I got exposed to a variety of beverages including tea during my growing years. The other day, I was passing through the aisles of a crowded supermarket in a mall on the Mall Road (aka MG Road, not Mahatma Gandhi Road but Mehrauli Gurgaon Road) wher I was fascinated by the choice that is available. Leaf, Dust, Assam (Dooars, Upper Assam), Nilgiris, South Indian (by garden name), infusion tea (various flavours and chemicals), dessert teas, pre mixed powedered tea, hrbal tea (with no tea leaves in it), green tea, white tea, oolong tea, Kenyan tea, Srilankan tea and then I got distracted by a few other attractions in the store.
Are we satisfied with the availability of options? Does not look like when I see and talk around.
Welcome to marketeers dream - differentiate or perish.
I remember a quote (don't know who recited it to me) - Writing is on the wall, it is only readers who think it is meant for others.
